Brief summary: Nerdy, relatively-normal kid Andy has a massive crush on Mary Clear, the prettiest girl in middle school. Andy’s best friend Stanley is probably the most kind-hearted person he knows, but Stanley is the oddball of the school– he’s too tall, has gigantic ears, and red hair. Nearly everyone hates him, although he always takes the high road and keeps the peace wherever he can (also, he is Andy’s protector). It’s the mid-60s, and Andy’s got a great teacher (Ed Harris) who everyone (students and faculty) loves. One day, the teacher finds one of the school bullies beating up a girl, just because she’s ugly and shy. He immediately breaks up the fight. Shortly thereafter, the bully and his father start some crap: lies and rumors are spread (leading to some ugly, unfair stuff) and Andy is just trying to get through the school year without getting his butt kicked by one of the popular douchebags at school (who just happens to be Mary’s ex-boyfriend). What will happen to Andy, Stanley, and their favorite teacher? Will Stanley be the laughing stock of the talent show? And what is to come of Andy’s massive crush on Mary? See this great coming-of-age film to find out. I absolutely loved it and have seen it three additional times recently.
