Brief summary: This brilliant directorial (and writing) debut of Steven Soderbergh tells the story of Ann Millaney, a sexually-repressed woman married to a sleezebag lawyer, John. Ann’s promiscuous and extroverted sister Cynthia butts heads with Ann over various matters, and Ann feels that no one understands her at all.
The movie begins with a visit from John’s estranged friend, Graham, who is very awkward and dresses like an “undertaker for the art world.” Along the way, Ann and Graham get to know each other, and she finds that he is even more “weird” than she thought.
What is to happen to Ann and John’s fledgling relationship? Just how “weird” does Graham get? Will Graham’s strange hobby help or hurt the people he becomes close to? Watch the film and find out. I’ve seen this brilliant, brilliant piece of cinema over 200 times since it was first released, and proudly own the DVD. As all films featured on this blog, it is WELL worth your time.
