Brief summary: Derek (Edward Norton), a notorious local racist skinhead, just got out of prison after serving three years for violently murdering two black men in the mid-90s. During his incarceration, his little brother (Edward Furlong) has followed in his footsteps… formerly being a respectful kid and student, he is now down with the “D.O.C”, a local white-power/skinhead gang, hell-bent on harassing (and eventually trying to completely remove) the black population from the Venice Beach area, no matter what the cost.
After his release, Derek tries to rebuild his broken family, and keep them all out of harm’s way. Will his new path be just as violent, or will the path be one of regret, and a desire for peace? No matter what, there’s a lot of trouble/problems about to go down, especially with Cameron (Stacy Keach), the local leader of the neo-nazis, who has eagerly awaited Derek’s release from “Chino”, the main (and nearly unbearable) Los Angeles area prison.
Will Derek’s efforts be futile, or will they end in chaos, and more prison time?
I’ve seen American History X about 50 times. It is fantastic every single time…. and it really makes you think twice about racism or having racist feelings/opinions. Only for a minute or two does the movie get a little humorous…. the rest of the time, it’s non-stop intense, depressing, violent, or simply shocking.
Every human being who likes movies should have this film in their collection, and they should share it with EVERYONE they know… especially if any of their loved ones (family/friends) are racist or have prejudicial views about minorities.
PERFECT fuckin’ film.
